A note on language and orthography. |

| During my research, I relied mostly on Krio, the lingua franca of Sierra Leone, to talk to people. Most of my Kabala
informants were fluent in Krio; indeed, some of my younger Fula informants spoke Krio more fluently than they did
"their own language". Out of town, Krio was widely understood, if spoken less often by my informants.
I spoke only a little Fula myself, but understood far more than I could speak; I was able to get the gist of most conversations spoken in Fula that took place around me. I am not a linguist, and in this thesis I have written what I heard, using conventional English notation. At the end of the thesis, I have provided a short glossary of vernacular terms. There may be inaccuracies in my transcription but, in most cases, the terms translated are in common use and there should be no confusion. |
