ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
In producing these papers for publication, our main debt is to the authors and their academic advisers. We had hoped to include contributions from all the participants, but constraints of time and problems with communication have meant that some papers were not received at the time of going to press. It is hoped that some of these will eventually be published elsewhere.
Secondly we would like to thank the core staff of the Summer School, especially Ray Pahl, the Director, for his encouragement for this project; Cindy Buckley, who as Senior Tutor bore much of the responsibility for the project work, and who therefore deserves much of the credit for the quality achieved; Tina Danilewicz and James Bannen who were responsible for the Language Programme; and Katy Pickvance and Tanya Kristel for their invaluable work as counsellors, advisers and friends. We would also like to thank the staff of Darwin College, the UKC Conference Office, and the staff of the Computing Laboratory who provided the terminals which allowed the participants round-the-clock access to the computing system.
Thirdly, in producing the papers for publication, we would like to thank Sarah Pink; Pip Summersbee and Howard Davis for their patience with the invasion of their own research space; Chris Rootes who helped edit Sergey Mamay's paper; Mike Fischer, the Director of CSAC on whose equipment the camera-ready copy was been produced; and Mike Nicholls of Short Run Press, Ltd. for his remarkable efficiency in turning manuscripts into books. Finally, we would like to thank the sponsors of the Summer School who made it all possible: the Soros Foundation, the British Academy, and the ESRC, whose support for the costs of publication we gratefully acknowledge.
